There are several variables to consider, but in general, wire rope mfg's like to see a 10:1 or 20:1 ratio, meaning take the wire rope diameter and multiply it by 10 or 20, and that gives you the appropriate size sheave to use. The bigger, the better, and the easier on the wire rope. Of course, having a large, oversized sheave is not always doable or practical. Generally for this size of cable, we see diameters of 4" - 6".
