To hold tension and capture progress, you really need a progress capture pulley (also referred to as a self-blocking pulley). The ISC-RP702 is a great choice, and Portable Winch even has a video showing how to use it for directional felling...you can see that video at this link. For the batteries, unfortunately Stihl uses proprietary batteries, so they won't work.
