The sheave will certainly accept 1/4" cable, but it will not be 100% efficient. You may notice the cable start to flatten out over time, depending on how heavily it is loaded. It also might fatigue sooner due to the lack of sidewall support. This is common when one tries to run an undersized cable in an oversized sheave.
