Crosby has a great definition in their catalog, please read below, and note that "Safety Factor" and "Design Factor" are often used interchangeably.
"An industry term denoting a products theoretical reserve capability; usually computed by dividing the catalog ultimate load by the Working Load Limit. Generally expressed as a ratio, e.g., 5:1."
