The manufacturer recommends 5/16" or 3/8" rope. It's not to say that you can't use 1/2" rope, but it's not recommended. If you want to use 1/2" rope and tether the winch to your hitch, I would recommend looking at the Portable Winch brand. Their PCW5000 model accommodates 1/2" rope and they offer a hitch mount plate as well (PCA-1261).
