It's tough to give an absolute answer on this. As we say in the industry, wire rope has a memory, which means when bent and or kinked, especially under load, wire rope will retain the shape you put it in. This will happen to some extent when connecting the eye of your choker to the hook on your winch line. The choker eye will elongate and come to a bit of a point after being loaded. Depending on the diameter of the hook area that is contacting the choker, this could be more or less severe. The simple idea is the greater or larger the bend radius, the easier it is on your wire rope. The tighter it is, the more the wire rope will be strained or possibly damaged. This is why some of our customers prefer a thimbled eye on their chokers, as thimbles help to preserve the shape of your eye and also help to prevent damage from abrasion.
