Crosby's engineering team had this to say: "Generally speaking, if the thread engagement is less than the projection amount, thread tear-out strengths need to be made. Technically, the female thread strength should be determined regardless (the bolts are per ASTM A574). This will be used to determine a minimum thread engagement length."
