Generally speaking, go by the condition of the rope. The reason is that rope can be damaged or rendered unserviceable on its very first day of use. On the other hand, rope can remain relatively unused, or lightly used, for several years. At the extreme end of the spectrum, even if a rope is relatively unused, it may be advisable to discard the rope after "X" number of years, often 5 or 10 but that is determined by the user.
