Will this release under load? I am looking for a release to do drop testing with, so I need a release that will release under load but provide method to maintain a safe distance for operators.

No, this hook is not designed for that purpose. Rather it is designed so that once the load is set in place, one can release the hook or shackle from the ground and pick a new load, over and over. It removes the need for someone to work at height, rigging and un-rigging the load.
